A Study to assess Emotional Intelligence among Higher Secondary School Students in a Selected School in Kollam District, Kerala
Abstract
The study was undertaken to evaluate the level of Emotional Intelligence among higher secondary school students in a selected school in Kollam district. The specific objectives were to determine the Emotional Intelligence levels of higher secondary students and to examine the relationship between Emotional Intelligence and selected socio-demographic characteristics. A total of 50 students participated in the study. A descriptive research design was adopted, and participants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a socio-demographic questionnaire and a Modified Emotional Intelligence Scale. The findings revealed that most students (76%) demonstrated a moderate level of Emotional Intelligence, while 16% exhibited a low level and 8% showed a high level of Emotional Intelligence. According to statistical analysis, there was no significant correlation found between emotional intelligence scores and any of the chosen sociodemographic factors, such as age, gender, family type, number of siblings, and monthly family income. These results suggest that the Emotional Intelligence levels of the participants were largely independent of the demographic factors examined in the study.
