Mirror Brain: A Comprehensive Review of the Mirror Neuron System and Its Implications for Human Behavior, Learning and Healthcare

Abstract


The mirror brain, or Mirror Neuron System (MNS), refers to a specialized network of neurons that activates both when an individual performs an action and when they observe another person performing the same action. Since its discovery, MNS has become fundamental to understanding social cognition, empathy, imitation learning, and motor development. This review synthesizes neuroscientific research on the anatomy, physiology, and functional significance of the mirror brain, with emphasis on its relevance in healthcare, psychology, education, and neurorehabilitation. Implications for autism spectrum disorder, stroke recovery, mental health, and clinical training are discussed. Understanding the mirror brain contributes to improved teaching–learning methods and enhances empathetic patient care in nursing and other health sciences.
