The Impact of Drugs on Pregnancy: Understanding Risks and Considerations

Abstract


Teratogens  are substances that result  in malformation or abnormalities  in the developing  fetus.  A very few medications  namely  Sone anti epileptic  drugs and isotretinoin ( used for severe acne) come under this category.  These  drugs should  nit be used particularly  during  pregnancy  because  of the enhanced risk of both defects. Health care providers frequently  weigh the potential  risks and benefits  if consider the use of drugs namely antibiotics, antidepressants and anti hypertensive.  Even seemingly harmless over_ The _ counter ( OTC) drugs such as cough medications  and pain relievers may show implications  for pregnancy.  Substance  like cocaine, heroine and methamphetamine can result in a very few complication like premature birth, low birth weight and developmental  issues.  It is finally concluded  that expectant mitherscmust engage in an active manner in conversations with their healthcare teams to enhance the best possible outcomes for both themselves and their unborn children.
