Abstract

Background:  Neonatal sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Prevention, early recognition and management of this infection require informed knowledge, prenatal education and effective baby care practices in the postpartum. Thus, the purpose of this study was to ascertain postpartum moms' awareness of neonatal sepsis and their preventive measures.

Methods: This study is facility based and adopted a descriptive cross-sectional survey among 345 selected postpartum mothers through purposive sampling technique. A self-structured validated instrument was used. Data analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics at P-value < 0.05 level of significant.
Results: More than half (57.4%) of postpartum mothers were within 31-40years with the mean age of 36years, majority (61.7%) are multipara while (54.5%) have tertiary education. More than half (56.8%) of the respondents had an average knowledge level regarding neonatal sepsis. The result revealed that the knowledge level of neonatal sepsis was significantly associated with their parity (P-value =0.001 *;X 2 =13.85) while the relationship between mothers attendance of antenatal care and their  knowledge of neonatal sepsis was not significant at (P-value=0.000*; X =135.4) at P= .0.05. The result also indicated a strong positive correlation between knowledge of neonatal sepsis and practice of exclusive breast feeding as a preventive practice (r = 0.716**; p-value = 0.05.
Conclusion: As indicated in the findings, to reduce neonatal mortality, it is essential to provide prenatal health education to mothers who are basic care givers to reduce the knowledge gap of neonatal sepsis.
