Potential of SCIG for the Wind Energy Conversion System

Shripad G. Desai, D. S. Bankar

Abstract

The present day scenario in the wind energy sector involves the use of DFIG (Doubly Fed Induction Generator) on a large scale. The primary objective governing the use of DFIG is its enhanced power output and lower or negligible reactive power compensation. Various factors are to be considered before concluding the superiority of any WTG (Wind Turbine Generator) Type; the various aspects irrespective of the Power Output and Reactive Power include the Quality of Power delivered at the Grid end, power output at varying range of wind speeds, capability to recover from faults etc. These aspects are vital governing the selectivity of each of these machines. In this research work a comparison study amongst the Type 2 SCIG (Squirrel Cage Induction Generator) and Type 3 (DFIG) is performed in ETAP software to present the potential of the Type 2 (SCIG) machines. The outcomes of the analysis will provide a promising option to the future Power System Engineers.
