An Overview of Madurai Smart City

Abstract

India is having a population of 1.2billion, ranking second internationally in terms of population, next to china. Among such huge population about one third of the population is living in urban areas. India has taken a bold initiative of smart cities mission in 2015, by giving center framework and average personal satisfaction to its resident by advancing urban communities with a spotless and practical condition and applying brilliant arrangements. It centers around comprehensive turn of events and supportability. The principle thought is making a replicable model which acts like beacon for other hopeful urban areas. India is promoting its majorly in two broader concepts; they are area based development and pan city solutions. Area based developments comprises of three main components city improvement (retrofitting), city renewal (redevelopment) and city extension (greenfield development). Pan city solutions are smart solutions which are applied for covering larger parts of the city. For the first time in India, Ministry of urban development is using the “challenge or completion method” to identify 100 potential cities by competing with themselves to become smart cities. About 35 percentages of urban dwellers are benefited by this mission with the total funding of 48000 crore rupees. At national level there are two types of monitoring, they are apex committee and national mission directorate. Among all the states of India, Uttar Pradesh is having 13 smart cities development next to Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu comes in the second place with 12 smart cities development. In the selected12 cities, Madurai is the only ancient city that preserves its own culture and heritage in it for the past 2000 years. This paper is dealing with the transformation of Madurai from an ancient city to modern city. The strategy that government of Madurai is taking as a convergence to become a smart city.
