Urban Renewal for Sustainable Cities

Abstract


“Urban renewal is a process of redeveloping deteriorated parts of a city, often through demolition and new construction” There are five major reasons why urban renewal is important for cities to sustain for future generations, which include historic preservation, slum clearance, reduce crime, improve housing stock and economic vibrancy. So when we look urban renewal in terms of urban planning it basically deals with over all Urban Improvement, this covers various activities such as slum clearance, modernization, repair and improvement of the environment by reducing the general density in the built up areas, improving social services and institutions and renovating and preserving historic and architecturally valuable buildings and urban areas. Therefore Urban Renewal is directed at resolving number of physical problems, such as upgrading of housing stock, physical layout, and basic infrastructure to meet living standards.
