URBAN INTERVENTION OF BHOOTNATH MARKET AREA

Ar. Ghufran Ahmad Khan

Abstract

The Bhootnath area is majorly a residential area, comprising of both private and government houses. The area is flooded by commercial complexes along the roads and is a hub of commercial activities, highly encroached by vendors throughout the area. It also creates problems like traffic congestion and parking issues. A major part is occupied by the Bhootnath Mandir which is a part of the Bhootnath Trust, established around 50 years ago. Urban Design is a process of shaping the physical setting for life in cities, towns and villages. It is the art of making places. It involves the design of buildings, groups of buildings, spaces and landscapes, and establishing the processes that make successful development possible. Urban Design makes connections between people and places, movement and urban form, nature and built fabric. Urban Design deals with design and management of public places and the ways these places are used. I have tried to incorporate the principles of responsive environment in the rejuvenation of Bhootnath market area. The main motto of this paper will be to imply the urban intervention using urban design fundamentals and to define the market by developing it into an organized retail place using various urban design parameters.
