A REVIEW OF FIRE CAUSES IN INFORMAL SETTLEMENT

Nida Ali

Abstract

Fires in informal settlements are a pervasive and devastating problem, threatening the lives and properties of their residents. This paper delves into the primary causes of these fires, highlighting electrical hazards, open flames and cooking practices, overcrowding, lack of fire safety awareness, and limited access for emergency services as key factors. The prevalence of makeshift electrical connections, unregulated cooking practices, congested living spaces, and a general lack of awareness exacerbate the risk of fires in these vulnerable communities. To address these challenges, the paper advocates for the implementation of proactive measures, such as community awareness programs, improved infrastructure, regular inspections and maintenance, and enhanced accessibility for emergency services. By emphasizing the significance of these preventive strategies, the paper underscores the critical need to create safer living environments within informal settlements, aiming to curb the frequency and impact of fires in these at-risk communities.
