Sustainable Cities through Urban Renewal
Abstract
The process of redeveloping deteriorated areas of a city, usually through demolition and new construction, is known as urban renewal." Urban renewal is critical for cities to remain viable for future generations for five main reasons: it improves housing stock, lowers crime, eliminates slums, preserves historic neighborhoods, and boosts economic vibrancy. Thus, urban renewal as it relates to urban planning essentially deals with all aspects of urban improvement. This includes clearing out slums, modernizing, repairing, and enhancing the environment by lowering the general density of built-up areas, enhancing social services and institutions, and restoring and conserving historically and architecturally significant buildings and urban areas. Thus, the goal of urban renewal is to address several physical issues, like raising the standard of living by modernizing the housing stock, the physical design, and the fundamental infrastructure.
