Unnimaya K M, Vibitha Vijayan, Vishnu K R, Manesh D

Abstract

Green Computing has gained increasing attention in recent years, driven by environmental concerns, rising energy costs, and the growing energy demands of the IT industry. It focuses on the responsible and sustainable use of computing resources through energy-efficient hardware, optimized software, reduced resource consumption, and proper disposal of electronic waste (e-waste). Beyond reducing energy consumption and carbon footprints, Green Computing aims to develop next-generation IT systems that integrate sustainability with technological advancements.

This paper explores the principles of Green Computing, emphasizing energy- efficient coding, which minimizes power usage by optimizing software to reduce hardware dependency. It examines current trends, key challenges, and various approaches to making computing more eco-friendly. Additionally, it evaluates different strategies for addressing sustainability issues in IT infrastructure, such as virtualization, power management, and green data centers. Finally, the study highlights future directions in Green Computing research and its role in shaping sustainable IT practices.
