Causes of digital fatigue and its detrimental effects on student learning effectiveness and retention

Abstract


 

This study explores digital fatigue, which affects the effectiveness of student learning and retention. A sample of 90 students was used to collect data through a structured survey on aspects that contribute to digital fatigue. Significant contributors were identified through factor analysis and multiple regression. The results indicate that cognitive overload, emotional overload, and disruptors related to physical health —information overload, social overstimulation, and poor sleep severely degraded learning and retention. The intensity of digital engagement through the accompanying screen time and the multitasking was found to be insignificant. The study is important because it points out the necessity of addressing specific strategies in the management of digital fatigue and the improvement in academic performance.
