Polyherbal Balm: A Natural Approach to Musculoskeletal Pain Management

Abstract


Musculoskeletal disorders, which include conditions like sprains, strains, arthritis, and general muscle soreness, are common health issues that impair mobility and quality of life. Because of its holistic effectiveness and few side effects, natural, plant-based medicines have become more and more popular in recent years. The formulation and assessment of a polyherbal-based herbal balm including menthol, camphor, peppermint oil, and eucalyptus oil—all of which are recognized for their analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and counter-irritating qualities—are examined in this study.

In this way, the synergistic effects of various phytoconstituents targeting inflammation and pain through different pathways justify the polyherbal approach. The balm was prepared with paraffin wax and petroleum jelly as the semi-solid base to promote better spread ability and skin absorption.

Key physicochemical parameters were analysed to establish the quality of the formulation. The acid value recorded was 0.9256 mg KOH/g, suggesting very little free fatty acid, hence good stability. Using UV-Visible spectroscopy at 221 and 285 nm, the presence of active herbal constituents was confirmed. To guarantee the best integrity and shelf stability of the product, other parameters, like peroxide and saponification values were also calculated.

 

This study brings to the fore the scientific base and therapeutic application of polyherbal formulations toward control of pain in topical form. By intermingling traditional wisdom with modern evaluative methodologies, these balms afford safe, efficient, and economical musculoskeletal relief.
