Abstract

Cataracts, manifested by the clouding of the eyes natural lens, are a common age _ related vision problems. Aldolase reductase is an enzyme participated in the sugar metabolism pathway and its inhibition has been investigated as a potential v strategy especially for cataract prevention. Drugs namely epalrestat have shown a beneficial effect in animal studies by decreasing the accumulation of sugar alcohols, which can contribute to the formation of cataract. Oxidative stress plays an important role in the development of cataract. Antioxidants namely vitamin C and E, if administered orally or topically, have been studied for their capability to counteract Oxidative damage to the lens. Inflammation is another factor that contributes to the cataract formation. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) namely ketorokac and flurbiprofen have been investigated for their anti-inflammatory properties in the lens. Statins, generally used to decrease cholesterol levels, have been demonstrated for their potential benefits particularly in stopping Cataracts. Lanosterol as a potential compound that may dissolve Cataracts. Finally it is concluded that while surgical intervention remains the gold standard for treating Cataracts, ongoing research into Pharmaceutical interventions offer hope for alternative approaches.
