Knowledge and practice of lifestyle modification among hypertensive patients in selected hospitals in Akure south Local Government

Abstract

Background: Hypertension (HTN) which is a known as “silent killer” is a global public health issue that affects all countries and is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality accounting for 7.5 million premature deaths worldwide.

Aim: The study investigated the knowledge and practice of lifestyle modification among hypertensive patients in selected hospitals in Akure South Local Government.

Methodology: A descriptive study design was conducted among 160 hypertensive patients in selected hospitals in Akure South Local government Akure (University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital Complex, Arakale comprehensive health centre and Federal Medical centre, Annex). Data were collected through a pretested questionnaire. Analysis was done by using SPSS version 23.0.

Results: The mean age ± SD is 51.14± 15.72 with majority of respondent within the age range of 44-64. Findings of this study revealed that above average 61.6% of the respondents had good knowledge while only 38.4% had poor knowledge on lifestyle modifications of hypertension. Also, only 34.4% had high practice and a larger percentage of the participants 65.6% had low practice of lifestyle modification on hypertension. In addition, health beliefs 50.4%, medical conditions other than hypertension 46.4%, advance age 44.8%, lack of social /spouse support 44%, lack of knowledge about healthy eating 43.2%, family belief 41.6% and hereditary 40.8% were the major factors affecting adherence to lifestyles medication.

Conclusion: The fact remains that, across the globe, lifestyle modifiable factors are not easily embraced by clients with hypertension. Hence, there should be increase awareness on practice of lifestyle modification among hypertensive patients to promote adoption of healthy lifestyle. This could be achieved through regular jingle and mass media.
