Voltage Regulation and Power Loss Reduction using Optimal Capacitor Placement in a Distribution System

Abstract


In a distribution system, the loads are usually inductive in nature, thus, they have a lagging power factor which in turn generates a tremendous magnitude of power losses and voltage dips. Therefore, the primary objective of this paper is to propose a method which is to employ capacitor banks at adequate locations with proper sizes for the enhancement of voltage profile as well as minimization of power losses in the distribution system. Thus, this paper investigates the losses incurred in Sani Abacha 11kV distribution system and recommends adequate methods for improvement to ensure the efficiency and reliability of power supply at the distribution level. The software used for modeling and analysis by simulations of the power system is Electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP), the method used for power flow analysis is Newton-Raphson and Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used as an optimization method for the actualization of objectives.
