An Examination of Pumped-Hydro Storage Power Plant Design and Cost

Anil Kumar

Abstract

The global goal of generating 20 percent of electric power from renewable sources by 2020 can be easily accomplished through the use of hydropower. Pumped-Hydro Storage (PHS) systems are utilized for both energy generation and storage. In spite of the fact that hydropower is a laid out mean of force age in the country for north of sixty years, a PHS project is yet to be carried out in Lebanon. The primary objective of this paper is to design and investigate the viability of a PHS power plant located at an existing dam in a mountainous region at approximately 1600 meters elevation. Local economic indices and the costs of various system components, including real estate prices, have been taken into account in the project's cost analysis. Consequences of the investigation show that a PHS undertaking would be an entirely doable venture as a result of the lower levelized cost and its high productivity. Utilizing a current repository for capacity has dropped the general expense of the PHS project fundamentally and made the task all the more monetarily possible. The correlation between various indices, including the profitability index, interest rate, equity, and others, is then examined using a sensitivity analysis.
