Supply Chain Practices in Construction Projects

M. Pavithra

Abstract

Supply chain management (SCM) in construction projects is to effectively manage the transportation of materials and service to customer to ensure their satisfaction. SCM is a management process by which organization control the network of stockholder such as supplier retailer and distributer through which raw material are procured, manufactured final product and delivered to customers. In construction project, procurement activities occur during all stage of a project. Construction is a huge process, so suppliers of material are not available at right time and right quantity. It is difficult to control the activity, so SCM process is more essential to achieve control over all the activity of materials on the construction. This study of SCM concept is used to analyse the flow of materials and its usage from suppliers to the end user through ABC& FSN inventory analysis. And also to identify the reordering point of the materials to perform better in terms of matching supply and demand. Supplier quality management (SQM) which help to maintain the relationship with all the stakeholders (customer, supplier, contractor) in the construction project and it highlights the importance of investigating the supplier quality practices to give effective experiments to deliver products with the expected quality and achieve zero rework. Also explain the problem to adopt the SCM process in the Construction projects and describe the benefits in effective implementation of SCM. Finally provide suggestion to improve the productivity of the project in terms of cost, quality and time.
