Variation of Axial Load and Bending Moment in Columns due to Use of Special Shaped Columns

A. M. Shaikh, Dr. R.M. Sawant

Abstract

R.C.C. framed structure are generally constructed using square, rectangular or circular columns. Different studies are going on which deals with the use of special shaped column in R. C. C framed structure. In this study an effort has been made to study the behavior of columns of R.C.C. Framed structure by replacement of regular rectangular columns with special shaped column (like L, T, + shaped columns). Response spectrum analysis of total 8 structures having symmetrical square shape with different combinations of columns using ETABS software was done. The columns were divided into three categories as Corner column, Side Column and Mid column. The Axial Loads and Bending moment is compared for each category of columns. It was concluded that the special shaped columns can be effectively used in R.C.C. structures, as due to use of such columns, the bending moment can be relaxed in the respective column. Frames with all the special shaped column is good against resisting Bending moment..
