Comparison of Results for Analysis of Composite Beams of Different Cross Sections by Finite Element Method

Khan Shifa Khanam, Prof. R.D. Pandit, Dr. A.P. Wadekar

Abstract

Two composite beams of different cross section are considered to calculate stresses and deformations using Finite Element Method (FEM). Different aspect ratios for both the beams are taken. Pattern of layers taken in both of the beams under consideration are same. Analysis is done using the software ANSYS workbench based on FEM. Formulae developed so far have been mentioned which result in similar results as ANSYS workbench. Kirchhoff’s hypothesis is tae base for the simplest plate theory which is foundation for other advanced plate theories like First, Second and Third order shear deformation theories. Third order shear deformation theory being considered the most accurate. Results for both the beams are compared with one another. One beam is taken with a solid cross section where as the other is having a hollow square cross section. Both the beams have one end fixed and one end free. Composite material used for both the beams is same that is Graphite Epoxy.
