Abstract

Flat-Slab System is widely used in Bangladesh, as it possesses major advantages over traditional beam-column frame structures because of architectural reasons-free design of space, functional and economical aspects. The absence of beams makes the Flat-Slab structural system significantly more flexible for lateral loads then traditional RC frame system and that makes the system more vulnerable to seismic events. This research quantifies the seismic performance of Flat-Slab frame system compare to beam-column frame system using nonlinear static pushover analysis. Three building models are designed according to BNBC (2006) for this study, which are a beam-column frame structure, a Flat-Plate structure, and other Flat-Slab with peripheral beam structure. Non-linear static pushover analysis by using ETABS (9.7.4) was performed to assess seismic performance of these three type structures according to two main guidelines FEMA-273 and ATC 40. For different loading conditions resembling the practical situations of Dhaka city, the performances of these structures are analyzed with the help of capacity curve, capacity spectrum, deflection, drift, and seismic performance level. The seismic performance of a beam-column frame structure is much better than the other two systems and as well as the Flat-Plate system is most vulnerable among these three systems.
