Functional Health Pattern of Patients Living with Breast Cancer in Federal Medical Centre Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria

Abstract


Globally, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, account for 23% of all the female cancers. This study assessed the functional health patterns of patients living with breast cancer in the Federal Medical Center, Owo, Ondo State in relation to knowledge level, perception of towards the efficacy of treatment regimens for breast cancer, and adherence to treatment regimens for breast cancer. This study used a mixed method   research design. Using a convenience sampling technique, a total of 98 female patients were assessed. Data were collected using a self- designed, structured questionnaire which consists of five sections. Data collected were analyzed with SPSS software using both descriptive and inferential statistics. All the respondents had good knowledge of breast cancer and show good adherence to treatment regimens, majority 66.7% had a good perception towards the efficacy of the treatment regimen for breast cancer. Approximately 57.1% of the respondents had good functional health patterns. No significant relationship exists between the perception of patients about breast cancer and the efficacy of the treatment regimen (P = 0.45) but significant relationship exists between compliance with the treatment regimen for breast cancer and the functional health pattern of patients living with breast cancer (P = 0.04). Patient’s demonstrated good compliance to treatment regimen hence improved functional health pattern. Patients living with breast cancer should be encouraged to maintain adherence to the treatment regimen so as to have maintain functional health patterns and improved quality of life.
