Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Needle Stick Injury Post-Exposure Prophylaxis among Surgical Team Members in Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo State

Abstract


Needle stick injury are hazard encountered by people working with sharps and needles during operative procedures. Post exposure prophylaxis are measures devised to ensure non infection of exposed individuals. This study was aimed at assessing the level of knowledge, attitude and practice of surgical team members on needle stick injury post exposure prophylaxis. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among surgical team members at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital Irrua, Edo State Nigeria between June and July 2022. A structured self administered questionnaire using a convenient sampling technique was the instrument used to collect data. Data collected were analyzed and interpreted using simple descriptive statistics and results presented in tables, frequency and percentages. Result: a total of 105 surgical team members responded. 58 (55.2%) males and 47 (44.76%) females responded in the study. Surgeon 55 (52.4%), Preoperative  Nurses 29 (27.6%) and Anesthesiologist 21 (20%). Majority 102 (97.1%) of the surgical team members had adequate knowledge about needle stick post exposure prophylaxis. Majority of the surgical team members 75 (71.4%) had good attitude toward post exposure prophylaxis. Participant 80 (76.2%) thinks there should be post exposure prophylaxis with significant mean value of 3.5. A high proportion of respondent 75 (71.4%) had been vaccinated against Hepatitis B virus. 30 (28.6%) were exposed to HIV/HBV risky conditions and took PEP, 75 (71.4%) did not take PEP. 4 (3.8%) gave reasons for not taking as unaware or prophylaxis service and control, 3 (2.9%) lack of understanding of the value of reporting exposure, 5 (4.8) were afraid of stigma and discrimination, 3 (2.9) lack support and encouragement. The study shows that knowledge, attitude and practice of surgical team members towards post exposure prophylaxis is adequate. A formal PEP training with guidelines is recommended for surgical team members.
