Real-Time IV Bag Monitoring Using ESP32

Prof. A.S. Magar, Prof. S.J. Pardeshi, Prof. U.S. Gatkul

Abstract

In hospitals and healthcare centers, continuous monitoring of intravenous (IV) fluid levels is crucial to ensure timely administration and prevent complications such as air embolism or reverse blood flow. Traditionally, nurses or attendants must manually check IV fluid levels, which can lead to delays, human errors, or negligence, especially in busy environments. To overcome this challenge, the IV Bag Monitoring and Alert System is designed to automatically monitor the fluid level in an IV bag and provide real-time alerts when the fluid reaches a critical level. The system typically uses a weight sensor or infrared sensor to measure the fluid level and a microcontroller (such as Arduino or ESP32) to process the data. When the fluid drops below a preset threshold, the system triggers an audio-visual alarm or sends a notification to a mobile device or nurse station. This ensures that the medical staff can replace the IV bag promptly, reducing risks to the patient. This project enhances patient safety, reduces manual workload, and increases the efficiency and reliability of hospital care. The system is cost-effective, easy to implement, and can be integrated into smart healthcare systems for real-time patient monitoring.
