Abstract

The study appraised the outbound logistics of rural farmers’ food products in Ekiti State, with a view to examine distribution patterns and factors affecting the transport cost of rural farmers. Thirteen (13) rural settlements from one hundred and seventy one (171) identified rural settlements in Ekiti state were randomly selected. Questionnaires were administered using multistage sampling that incorporates systematic sampling and incidental sampling techniques. While the formal was used for farmers the later was used for marketers that patronized the rural market. Pie chart and percentage were used to describe the distribution patterns of the rural food products as well as the effect of transport modes on transport cost of both rural farmers and marketers. Multiple regression analysis was adopted to examine the relationship between the transport cost and state of route of transport, distance from farm to point of sale and modal choice. Result showed that condition of transport had significant effect on transport cost (F = 5.167, p = 0.002) at 0.05 significant level. Study concluded that the most prominent rural farmers’ modal choice was motor bike. Distance between farm location and market, state of transport route for rural farmers and mode of transport adopted by rural farmer influenced transport cost. Thus factors affecting transport cost were state of transport route, distance and modal choice.
