Comparative Evaluation of the Influence of Crumb Rubber on Rheological Indices for Asphalt Cement Binders

Saad Issa Sarsam

Abstract

Asphalt cement usually practices physical and chemical ageing process through the service life of the flexible pavement. Such ageing may be controlled by the addition of polymeric additives. An attempt has been made in the present investigation to assess the influence of implementing crumb rubber powder into three types of asphalt binder having the same penetration grade of (40-50) and obtained from three refineries. Samples of control and rubberized binders were subjected to short-term ageing process with the aid of thin film oven test apparatus. Specimens were subjected to physical and rheological properties determination before and after the ageing process. The rheological indices (penetration ageing index, ductility ageing index, creep stiffness, and softening point) were evaluated. It was concluded that penetration and the ductility ageing index increases after implementing 16 % crumb rubber by (2.7, 20, and 12.8) % and (13, 9.9, and 12.8) % for Dourah, Erbil, and Nasiriyah binders respectively. The Creep stiffness declined by (26.8, 31.3, and 12.1) % for Dourah, Erbil, and Nasiriyah binders respectively after implication of crumb rubber. It is recommended to verify the rheological indices of asphalt binder when implementing same penetration grade asphalt produced from different crude oil sources.
