Examination of the Characteristics of Air Cargo Delivery in Nigeria

Ayantoyinbo B. B., Gbadegesin A. E.

Abstract

Air transportation is the fastest means of conveying cargo from one place to another, most especially over long distance. However, majority of research in this area have concentrated on passenger satisfaction, while not much research has been carried out on efficiency of air cargo delivery in Nigeria. Therefore, this study assessed the characteristics of air cargo delivery in Nigeria. The study was carried out at the cargo terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos State, Nigeria. Cochran’s formula was used to reduce the population to a sampling size of 239. Random sampling technique by balloting was used to select the sampling size effectively. The study objective was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The characteristics of air cargo were identified to be: sorting for loading and shipment, applying for loading and shipment, dispatching and packing of cargo, cargo aircraft-side operations, checking of cargo order delivery, checking of cargo orders, loading and unloading of cargo, making of cargo delivery payment, seeing and picking of cargo documents and reorganization of cargo order. The study concluded that some of the characteristics of air cargo identified were not rated positively by the participants and needs some improvement while some are rated excellently. The study recommended that cargo airline should improve on service such as: reorganization of cargo order seeing and picking of cargo documents and the making of cargo delivery payment.
