Evaluation of Gender and Transportation in Lagos State, Nigeria

Abstract


Gender bias in transportation sector is a matter of concern for any welfare democratic and developing state. Equal opportunities and compensation of female work force are required to be built in governmental policies of such state; mobility disparities have serious implications on the livelihoods of not only the women, but also their families and the society at large. The findings of this study will highlight challenges encountered by women in transportation accessibility in Nigeria and examine the travel behavior as well as modal choice of women in public transport.

The study used quantitative research design to obtain information from the respondents Purposive sampling techniques were used to select 384 respondents from the study area. The data was collected through self-administered question.

The findings of the study revealed that majority of the respondents makes used of motor-cycle which constitutes 23.6%. Additionally, it was observed that 107 respondents constituting 27.9% of the overall 381 sample size from the study area rate high the waiting time at the terminal. Furthermore, it was belief that safety is important when making decision on which mode to use for a particular trip. The result of the findings also revealed that there were limited Correlation between gender and their travel characteristics in the study area.

The study recommended that government and transport policy workers in the state should develop a framework that will reduce gender inequality.
