Effect of RTFOT Aging on Physical Properties: A Comparative Experimental Investigation of VG 30 and PMB 40 Bitumen with RTFOT Modification

Harsh Rathore, S K Soni

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive assessment of PMB40 and VG30 bitumen, both in their original state and following Rolling Thin Film Oven Test (RTFO) aging. The investigation focuses on various physical properties such as penetration, softening point, ductility, specific gravity, flashpoint, and fire point. Test results were compared against specifications outlined by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRT&H) and IRC guidelines. The analysis reveals that PMB40 and VG30 bitumen samples, even after RTFO aging, adhere to the prescribed limits for all evaluated properties. These findings affirm the suitability of these bitumen types for bituminous concrete applications, providing crucial insights for effective road construction. The research contributes to the understanding of how RTFO aging impacts bitumen properties, ensuring durability and performance of asphalt pavements.
