Innovative Approaches to Utilize Waste Plastics in Sustainable Construction: A Comprehensive Review
Abstract
The utilization of waste plastics in construction has garnered significant attention as a promising solution to both waste management challenges and the quest for sustainable construction practices. This paper presents a comprehensive review of recent literature focusing on the incorporation of waste plastics, particularly PET bottles, into various construction materials. Studies have explored diverse methods, including the use of waste plastics in manufacturing bricks, asphalt, and concrete. Researchers have demonstrated the feasibility of combining waste plastics with materials such as laterite quarry dust, bitumen, and soil to produce bricks with desirable properties, including good compressive strength and minimal water absorption. Additionally, investigations have highlighted the environmental benefits of recycling waste plastics in construction, such as reducing the burden on landfills and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. This review underscores the potential of innovative construction practices to address waste management challenges while advancing sustainability goals.
