An Investigation on the Durability Issues of the Asphalt Concrete Mixtures

Saad Issa Sarsam

Abstract

Asphalt concrete pavement practices repeated flexural stresses and harsh environmental impact throughout its service life. In the present work, asphalt concrete mixture pertaining to the wearing course pavement layer was assessed through this investigation. Samples of asphalt concrete slabs were compacted using the laboratory roller compaction and prepared with the highest possible binder content. The slab samples served as the basis for the extraction of beam specimens, which were then subjected to dynamic flexural stresses at three constant micro strain levels of (250, 400, and 750).Specimens of asphalt concrete were seperated into three groups. The first group of specimens was tested after practicing the long-term ageing process. The second group was subjected to the  moisture damage before testing. The third group was the control mixture. The testing of the asphalt concrete beam specimens was performed at moderate testing environment, 20
