Analysis of Divergent Effects of Driver Behavior on Road Safety and Risk Perception for Various Modes of Transportation in Dhaka, Bangladesh
Abstract
As the number of road traffic accidents continues to rise, road safety has become a major global issue across the globe. This study aims to explore the impacts of driver behavior across different modes of transportation on driving safety and their perception of risk. In order to find out relation between perceptions, behavior, and attitudes for three different modes of transport, a questionnaire survey was carried out both online & offline which collected around 212 responses in Dhaka city. The perceptions of risk in road transportation systems, usage, Attitude towards safety, and the behaviour of driving were subsequently developed using the factor analysis through SPSS and Path analysis through STATA Software where 18 observed variables and 2 latent variables have been analyzed. The two latent constructs identified were safe driving behaviour and risky driving behaviour. The findings demonstrated that all the observed variables were significant except overtaking, towards latent variables. The findings developed a significant comparative and positive relationship between drivers' risk perception and different safety attitudes, as well as accident exposure and safety attitudes. The findings of this study will contribute to enhancing traffic safety by minimizing accidents and fostering positive changes in driver behaviour. These insights may also inform the implementation of essential planning and administrative measures within road safety and sustainability policies.
