Abstract

Body mechanics is straight linked to the effective functioning of the body. Body mechanics need to be used correctly in all activities, including rest periods. Walking, turning, lifting, and carrying are all important aspects of nursing care. For the study, a quantitative method with a basic descriptive design was chosen, and a non-probability easy sampling method was employed to pick 30 staff nurses. A structured questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge and a check list used to assess the practice regarding body mechanics. The results revealed that majority of staff nurses (53.4%) had moderate knowledge in the pre test. After structured teaching programme (3.3%) had moderately adequate knowledge and (96.7%) had adequate knowledge (6.4%) had poor practice and (93.6%) had good practice regarding body mechanics in selected nursing interventions. Paired ‘t’ test showed that there was a significant improvement between pre test and post test knowledge with ‘t’ value of 17.50 at p< 0.001. Correlation of improvement knowledge and practice revealed that there is positive correlation between the knowledge and practice. The r value was 0.6. Chi- square test revealed that there was significant association between post test level of knowledge and practice with selected demographic variables. The study found a strong relationship between post-test level of knowledge and practise and selected demographic characteristics. The planned education curriculum will serve to increase the knowledge and practise of staff nurses, reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injury.
