Abstract

The  presence of  in  pleural  space  is  termed  as  pneumothorax.Normally  the  intrapleural  pressure  shows  always  negativity  but  pressure  exhibits  positivity  especially  in  pnemothorax  and  this  conditon  result  in  collapse of  lungs.  Hypoxia  is  not  seen  in  closed  pnemothorax.  In  open  pneumothorax,  the collapse  of  the  lungs  result  in  asphyxia,  cyanosis,  dyspnea,  hypercapnea  as  well  as  hypoxia.  Different  types  of  collapsed  lung  are  catamenial  pneumothorax,  iatrogenic  pneumothorax,  Injury  related  pneumothorax,  primary  spontaneous  pneumothorax  and  secondary  spontaneous  pneumothorax.  Signs  of  collapsed  lungs  are  cough,  rapid  breathing,  rapid  heart  rate (HR),  fatigue  and  shortness  of  breath.  The  diagnosis  of  pneumothorax  is  based   is  based  on  CT  scan  or  ultrasound.  Treatment  is  based  on  a  chest  tube  drainage,  chemical  pleurodesis, Needle  aspiration  and  supplemental  oxygen.
