Abstract

Hyperventilation  is  linked  to  an  enhanced  pulmonary  ventilation  via  forced  breathing.  Both  the  rate  and  force  of  breathing  are  exaggerated  in  hyperventilation.   Very  often,  hyperventilation  leads  to  the  occurrence  of chest  pain,  discomfort  and  dizziness.  Excess  of  CO2  results  in  activation  of  respiratory  centers.  Especially  during  hyperventilation,  CO2  is  washed  out  in  an  extensive  manner.  In blood,  partial  pressure  of  CO2  is  reduced and  results  in  the  depression  of  respiratory  centers  and  results  in  apnea.  Symptoms  of  hyperventilation  syndrome  are  burping  or  bloated  stomach  and  dry  mouth.  Diagnosis  of  hyperventilation  syndrome  is  based  on  chest  X  ray,  ECG  and  pulse  oximetry.  Hyperventilation  lowers  ICP  in  a  quick  manner.  Cerebral  blood  flow  is  dependent  on  partial  pressure  of  CO2.  Treatment  is  linked  to  the  diaphragmatic  (abdominal)  breathing.  Breathing  exercise,  meditation,  practicing  mindfulness  and  regular  exercise  are  related  to  the  prevention  of  hyperventilation  syndrome.
