Effect of Fearless Energy Drink on Cardiovascular Parameters (Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure and Heart Rate) Among Young Males And Females Adults
Abstract
The consumption of Energy drink in Nigeria and the global community has been on the increase over the past decade. This is most especially among University students who ingest it for a number of reasons ranging from to keep alert, stay awake and energy boost for high performance. This study evaluates the effect of FEARLESS ENERGY DRINK on Systolic and Diastolic blood pressure and Heart rate of the subjects. Twenty -five (25) male and (25) female subjects aged 21-25 years, weighing 52 – 92 kg were used for this research. Care was taken to exclude students who had any cardiovascular problem or where on any medication that could affect cardiovascular and blood pressure parameters. Also smokers and alcoholic were also excluded from this study. Additionally, the participants were advised not to take any alcohol for at least 24h prior to the study date. They were also asked not to consume any caffeine-containing products, such as tea, chocolate or cola drinks, for at least 12hrs before the study. Moreover, subjects were requested not to do any excessive physical activity prior to the test. On the day of the test, their baseline characteristics where taken. They were given fearless energy drink, 250 or 500ml, to be consumed within 5mins. Their blood pressure and heart rate were measured using digital sphygmomanometer which was taken before consuming the beverage, thereafter it was taken at 45, 60, 75, 90,105 and 120minutes after ingestion of the Energy Drink. Their SBP, DBP and heart rate (HR) was also determined before and after consumption of Energy Drinks. The findings of this study revealed a significant increase in Systolic and Diastolic blood pressure and heart rate among the male subjects at various durations when compared to the values before ED consumption. However female subjects tolerate Energy Drinks consumption more than male subjects. This changes could results to arrhythmias for this reason, habitual consumption of Energy Drinks among young male adults should be discouraged especially individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions.
