Abstract

Implantable Medical Devices (IMDs) are miniaturized devices that can be implanted inside human body without any potential hazard to health and advancement in IMD sector is crucial for the development of the biomedical telemetry. This article has proposed a design of a miniaturized implantable meandered Planar Inverted-F Antenna (PIFA) that able to operate Medical Implant Communications Services (MICS) band. The proposed antenna has a shorting pin in a suitable position for better miniaturization resulting in a more compact antenna size and superior performance is observed. The simulations are conducted in a rectangular model where the tissue properties equivalent to human body is placed using bio-tissue material. Afterwards, four different substrates are used keeping the dimensions of the antenna constant for observing other essential characteristics of the antenna like return loss and gain, and then the performances of the antenna are compared with different substrates. The designed antenna has a volume of 1.492 cm3 which can be better fitted in an IMD successfully.
