Implementation of Enhanced Security Designs for PICO: An Ultra-lightweight, Robust and Low Power Cipher for Ubiquitous Computing

V. K. Anagha

Abstract

ABSTRACT

Improved security designs for the ultra-lightweight, and compact block cipher `PICO' is proposed. PICO is a substitution and permutation based network, which operates on a 64 bit plain text and supports a key length of 128 bits. The enhanced security designs merges the key scheduling algorithm of the ciphers `GIFT' and `RECTANGLE' into the overall framework of PICO yielding different trade-off patterns regarding security and hardware efficiency. PICO shows good performance on both the hardware and the software platforms. PICO has a very strong substitution layer (S-box) which makes the design robust. The design based on GIFT, a lighter version of the cipher `PRESENT' gives a secure design with reduced hardware complexities. We can go for the lightweight RECTANGLE-based design for platforms where increased security is a major concern while compromising complexities in hardware.
