Application of Shainin Tools for Performances Improvements

Atul Bante, Dr. S T Bagde, Dr. PD Kamble

Abstract

Dorian Shainin popularized a set of methods for addressing production-related issues; he called his approach, the Shainin System (SS). Dorian Shainin, who has a background in engineering, has referred to this method as Statistical Engineering. The technique is available through Shainin LLC, a consulting organization, and is marketed under the trademark name Red X Strategy. Much of SS is under-discussed and under-documented in scholarly literature. The purpose of this essay is to introduce readers to SS, evaluate it critically, and contrast it briefly with alternative methods for addressing problems in industry. Principles and guiding tenets are the focus of this analysis. Particular SS instruments are dissected and contrasted with other approaches. We found that the Shainin System was helpful in solving a wide variety of issues, and we believe that many of its components may be useful in complementing other process improvement approaches. While SS has been widely adopted, many of the statistical tools and approaches that have been pushed in tandem with it are neither cutting-edge nor the most effective.
