Abstract

In this review study on pin fins found latest trend of art of technological development. Experimental, numerical and computational fluid dynamics investigations are studied. It was observed that the investigations on pin fins and pin fin heat sinks are in trending research on pin fins. Pin fins implementation and investigations in the gas turbine blades and heat exchanger tubes, micro pin fin development, fabrication techniques, materials used are discussed here. As the pin fins are compact in size, it can be used in narrow channel to dissipate heat as well as to enhance structural strength of the channel. The heat transfer rate in the microchannel by the pin fin is also better. Pin fins performance can be tested by fabricating on the test plate in the form of arrays and also by making pin fin heat sinks. Usual arrangements of pin fins are inline and staggered. Compared to inline pin fin arrays, the staggered pin fin arrays are having higher heat transfer rate. The Reynold’s number (Re), Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) are the key parameters to test pin fin performance.  To validate experimental data, the empirical data correlation method holds good.
