Fabrication of Cost-Effective Table-Top Polishing Machine Using Cogged Belt Drive Mechanism for Microscopic Examination

S. Senthil Murugan

Abstract

This study explains the development of a cost-effective table-top polishing machine using a toothed belt drive power transmission with locally sourced materials and indigenous technology to help in polishing the metals for microscopic examination in metallurgy laboratories to obtain a flat, smooth and mirror-like surface finish on the metal specimen to study the morphological aspects of the specimen. The machine is deployed for not only wet polishing and also used for polishing the metals with different grade sheets. So, this machine is compatible with both dry and wet polishing. The cost-effective table-top polishing machine consists of a motor, wooden disc, pulleys, cogged belt drive, and clamp. A specimen was tested on the fabricated machine with different grade sheets. The result obtained after the polishing provides a flat, smooth surface to the expected level and the mirror-like finish was obtained by the wet polishing. Thus, the cost-effective machine developed for the specimen preparation will be the replacement for the imported expensive machines.
