Abstract

Composite materials with glass fiber reinforcement are very common in daily to daily life use. Its properties like high strength, modulus, corrosion resistance, insulation is excellent. Glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite is a very common natural choice of composite generally used in structural application. The use of glass fiber epoxy composite is very commonly used in automobile bodies, industrial furnishings, household and now days as furnishing materials used in decorative. Laminated composite structures have widespread of use in many applications starting from industries to automobiles. Composite Beams are the most commonly used structural components of buildings, bridges, body parts of automobiles, machineries, house hold products, bio medical products, aerospace, marine and etc. For general fitting holes are necessary to make that weakens the structure. The main objective of this work is to contribute a better understanding of the dynamic behavior of composite beam made from fiber reinforced composite materials with and without presence of holes. For this purpose, fiber reinforced composite beams are to be made by hand layup method. Screw compressive close molds are to be designed and prepared first to fabricate the composite beams under screw compressive load. E-glass is used as reinforcement. To manufacture the GFRP beam with precast hole, the fiber layers with holes at the center is first cut by the help of diamond cuter. The mechanical properties of the fabricated GFRP composite beam (solid) is to be analyzed through different material testing according to ASTM (American society of testing of materials) standards. The natural frequencies of the composite cantilever beams under free vibration are investigated. For this purpose, a low-cost modal testing setup is to be designed and fabricated. The natural frequencies of the solid beam, beam with hole and hole made in the beam by drilling after solidification are compared.
