Abstract

The compact tension fracture toughness testing is mostly perfomed on universal testing machine using the specific clamping (Gripers) accessories. The purpose of this project is to design and fabricate a special machine only for the compact tension fracture toughness testing. The machine will record the load via a load cell. The upper side of the load cell is attached with cross head and down side is attached with grip which can suffer to 2000kg load. The machine is control hydraulically with multistage rotary-vane pumps that can attain pressures as low as 10−6 mbar (0.0001 Pa). The machine is operated with an electronic remote attached that control the movement of griper in the upward and downward direction. The machine can be used to test a variety of materials like Biomaterial bone, tissues etc, Composite material, Textiles, Ceramics materials and Brittle materaisl etc.

The machine can use to find the fracture toughness, crack propagation etc. If the machine is used with DIC (Digital Image Correlation) the maximum and minimum strain field can be determine via analyzing the DIC images in Vic-2D software. The movable wheels are attached to the project to move it easily from one location to another. The parts of the machine are prepared and assembled in the worksho. The project is tested successfully for diferent materials.
