

Hardness Testing of Metals: Techniques, Applications, and Insights into Material Properties
Abstract
A basic technique for assessing metals mechanical qualities, hardness testing provides important information about how resistant they are to wear and distortion. This study explores various hardness testing techniques, including Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers, and Knoop methods, highlighting their principles, advantages, limitations, and applications in engineering and material science. Comparative analysis is performed on a selection of metals to investigate correlations between hardness, composition, and microstructure. The findings demonstrate how hardness tests can inform material selection, quality control, and predictive maintenance in industries ranging from automotive to aerospace. Emerging trends, such as microhardness and nanoindentation techniques, are also discussed, emphasizing their role in advancing material characterization at microscopic scales.
