Enhancing the Mechanical Properties of Plain Carbon Steel

Anurag Kumar

Abstract

Plain carbon steel, which is extensively used in manufacturing of various mechanical components such as axles, connecting rod, studs, fasteners and tools. These are primarily used in pressure applications i.e. boilers, pressure vessel, containers, heat exchangers, piping and many more components. Mechanical properties are the main criterion for the material to be used in such type of applications. In the present study, cryogenic treatment in the range of -196°C is used to enhance the mechanical properties of the plain carbon steel. The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of Deep Cryogenic Treatment (DCT)on AISI 1018 cold drawn steel pipes. Mechanical investigation has been performed on various samples of untreated and deep cryogenic treated steels. After deep cryogenic treatment, the improvements in the various mechanical properties are shown.

Keywords: Plain carbon steel; deep cryogenic treatment; mechanical properties.
