Knowledge and Attitude Regarding Phototherapy Among Mothers of Neonates

Abstract


An accumulation of bilirubin in the blood, known as hyperbilirubinemia, results in jaundice, a yellowish coloring of the skin and eyes. A yellowish pigment called bilirubin is created as red blood cells normally break down. Phototherapy is a safe and effective treatment for neonatal jaundice. It involves exposing the baby to special blue light, which helps their liver process and eliminates bilirubin. Phototherapy uses blue light to convert bilirubin into a form that is easier for the body to excrete through urine and stool. The descriptive study was conducted to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding phototherapy among mothers of neonates. Sample consisted of 100 mothers of neonates from N.S Memorial Institute of Medical Science, Palathara, Kollam, Kerala, sample selection was done by nonprobability purposive sampling. Data was collected using a pretested validated and reliable questionnaire on knowledge regarding phototherapy and 5point likert scale to assess the attitude regarding phototherapy. The current study's goals were to evaluate mothers of newborns' knowledge of phototherapy, their attitudes toward phototherapy, to determine the association between knowledge of mothers of neonates regarding phototherapy with selected socio demographic variables, to determine the association between attitude of mothers of neonates regarding phototherapy with selected socio demographic variables, to determine the correlation between knowledge and attitude of mothers of neonates strong adults with enhanced quality of human resource development. According to the WHO, Neonatal jaundice, also known as hyperbilirubinemia, is the yellow discoloration of a newborn’s skin and eyes caused by elevated bilirubin levels in the blood.
