Tactical Urbanism – A Sustainable Approach to Walkable Streets

Raxshitha Sasikala

Abstract

The rapid growth of city, making it the center for population, production and constantly subjected to change in its demography, along the way became less livable. The paper expresses the need for environmental friendly habitat along with people participation through tactical urbanism. The paper will also examine how tactical urbanism contributes to creating walkable neighborhoods containing a wide range of residential types and commercial activities. The introduction and definition of the term is explained. What makes tactical urbanism different from other new urbanism movements will be addressed. The history and origin of tactical urbanism is also discussed, as it is wrongly perceived to be a relatively new concept. The implementation of pilot projects to predict the success rate in different contexts are explained through case studies and the documentation of these results are examined. The measures taken to design such projects are also studied in details. The paper also includes understandings drawn from international case studies, based on tactical urbanism strategies.
