A Critical Review of Energy Retrofitting Techniques in Building

Navnita Pal

Abstract

Building retrofitting is an essential component of a plan to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in order to meet the ambitious emission-reduction targets of the Paris Agreement. because a significant portion of the existing global building stock will still be in use in 2050.It is therefore crucial to monitor the energy use of the building industry, which accounts for around 40% of all energy consumption [1]. It is more time-consuming to monitor the energy use in existing buildings than new construction. Due to the poor energy performance of existing buildings and the low rate of new construction in developed nations, energy retrofitting of existing buildings is a promising strategy for reducing built environment environmental impacts. The adoption of ECMs (energy conservation measures) in buildings can be accelerated by making use of retrofit analysis toolkits to maximize energy or cost savings from retrofit strategies. This paper reviews various methodologies of building energy retrofitting and the associated challenges. It also provides a review of various toolkits used for energy retrofitting and the role of computational design & the challenges associated with the same.
