Challenges of Basement Ventilation Systems In Fire & Life Safety

Saksham Adaulia

Abstract

Basements are one of the most important and functional parts of buildings as they are exempted from ground coverage areas and hence provide a bigger footprint for usable spaces. As these spaces are below ground, it is not ideally used for providing habitable spaces but still used for Services, Utilities and Parking areas. Providing ample natural Ventilation is not possible in case of Basements, thus mechanical ventilation is provided for exchange of fresh air; Basic components for Basement ventilation are Mechanical Ventilation system and Fire Protection System, during operations a Large amount of Smoke is generated in basements during operations due to Vehicles and Service areas; also in case of fire, water based sprinkler system can effectively extinguish fire, but managing the smoke generated still remains a critical task. This paper discusses the critical Challenges of Basement Ventilation Systems.
