Abstract

Public open space causes the psychological and physical wellbeing of the urban population. Due to providing an opportunity for people to getting in touch with each other. Public open space has an effective influence on the degree of social interaction. Literature suggests social interaction in public open space largely depends on the design attributes of the space and there exist proven ways to enhance the use of urban green space. Different studies argue regarding identified important features of green space at an urban scale that there remain inconsistent to use open space because this largely depends not only on physical attributes but also relates with cultural factors and behavioral intention of users. Dhaka is one of the fastest growing cities in the Asian world has experienced an insufficient amount of urban green space to fulfill the requirement of the huge urban population. In this context, the nature and quality of public open places have raised the question of how far these places contribute to social interaction. The study has summarized multiple research with the objective to describe the design characteristics of green space which contribute to the factors affecting the level of social interaction. within the range of public open space and social interaction, the literature search process was broad including peer-reviewed literature and gray literature on public space design. The initial focus on research studies and reports that focused on the physical environment and social interaction in public open space and their relationship to outcomes in these settings. The study identifies some design attributes that can promote favorable social interaction. Finally, this study also comparing two public open space at the context of Dhaka, viewing physical characteristics and level of social interaction.
